Teacher Tony London

About

Tony was born in London's Notting Hill and raised by his musical family in Royal Greenwich. He was surrounded by music from a young age, with many of his aunts, uncles, and community members singing, dancing and playing music.

After studying Leisure Management at university, Tony became a full-time fitness instructor, teaching aerobics, spinning, yoga and dance classes across London. He taught up to 20 exercise classes per week before it became too demanding on his body.

As an emerging career change, Tony studied accounting and finance. He worked in various corporate finance roles, including on the 2012 London Olympics site, Westfield Stratford and Thames Water. The high-pressure corporate environment eventually led to Tony burning out.

During this difficult period, music provided comfort and therapy. Tony focused on caring for his autistic son and reevaluating his priorities. He started playing steel pans after being asked to book a steel band for his sister's wedding. Seven years later, Tony is an accomplished steel pan soloist and owns his own instrument shipped from Trinidad.

Tony is inspired by the power of music to bring people together and make them feel good. He loves surprising people with his musical talent and knowledge. His most rewarding musical experiences include leading funeral services, performing at community events, and entertaining the homeless.

Tony emphasizes always learning and staying humble. He advises understanding your clients and community, as connecting with people is more important than technical perfection. While happy as a musician, Tony is open to consulting or coaching to help others in business. His goal is to grow his brand and share his gift as a performer and teacher.

Do you teach piano?

I teach piano with music theory and general musicianship. Students often like to combine this with other instruments such as the steelpan, hand drum, recorder, harmonica and more.

What level piano do you teach?

I teach students to play popular songs, hymns and classical from complete beginner up to Grade 3. I also encourage students to improvise and compose their own works.

Do you teach drums?

I teach percussion, rhythms and hand drumming (such as bongos, djembe, etc). I also teach the basics of drum kit.

What type of steelpan do you teach?

I teach all forms of steelpan. However, as I have an alto (double seconds) pan, most of my students learn that.

Can you come to my home for lessons?

I usually teach from my home music studio. Do contact me and we can discuss alternative arrangements.

Do you do group lessons?

Yes. Many of my students enjoy group lessons with their siblings or friends. Some students meet my other students and get together for group tuition. Speak to me about group lessons and we’ll see what we can arrange.

How much notice of cancellation do you need?

Let me know as soon as you need to reschedule or cancel. You can also do this here online for 24 hours notice. Do contact me if you have any emergencies.
